Free Holiday-weekend Permit Pilot Program begins for Old Goldledge Campground

Kernville, CA – Sequoia National Forest officials announce Free Holiday-weekend Permits for Old Goldledge Campground, located on the Kern River Ranger District, starting Memorial Day weekend.

According to the Kern River Ranger District Recreation Officer, Tricia Maki, the district is continuing efforts to balance the needs of recreationists with impacts to the land along the Upper Kern Wild and Scenic River. In 2019 a pilot program is being implemented at Old Goldledge Campground to more closely align the number of visitors and vehicles with the physical capacity of the camping area.

The free permit program will only be in place during high use holiday-weekends. Visitors will not be allowed to camp in the Old Goldledge dispersed area during these weekends without a permit. Except for the Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day weekends, Old Goldledge is open for camping without a permit.

Dates Free Permits are required:

Memorial Day Weekend: May 23-27 (Thursday – Monday)
For Memorial Day Weekend Permits: Requests must be received between April 19 and May 3, 2019. Lottery drawing and notifications will take place by May 6, 2019.

July 4th Weekend: July 3 – 7 (Wednesday – Sunday)
For July 4th Weekend Permits: Requests must be received between April 29 and May 28, 2019. Lottery drawing and notifications will take place by May 31, 2019.

Labor Day Weekend: August 29 – September 2 (Thursday – Monday)
For Labor Day Weekend Permits: Requests must be received between July 1 and July 29, 2019. Lottery drawing and notifications will take place by August 2, 2019.

To manage the number of campers, reduce health and safety risks and minimize damage to natural resources in the Old Goldledge dispersed camping area, free holiday-weekend permits will be issued on a lottery basis. “Currently, far more people camp in this dispersed campground on summer holiday weekends than the site can sustainably accommodate,” stated Maki. “This overcrowding also causes public safety concerns by limiting emergency vehicles access.”
